With spring ball a little under 10 days away, Texas football has many notable early enrollees that this staff is excited to see in their first action in practice/camp. Among the top early enrollees for Texas is the top five-star signees from the 2024 recruiting class, including edge rusher Colin Simmons and safety Xavier Filsaime.

Filsaime was one of those important late-cycle additions for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns staff in the 2024 class before signing day last December. The elite safety recruit from the DFW-Metroplex has the physical tools and instincts to be an early-impact player in Texas's secondary in 2024.

Adding Filsaime to this safety room shows just how far Texas's secondary has come in the last few years. A couple of years ago, Filsaime would likely be a shoo-in as a first-year starter for the Longhorns at safety.

Texas's mantra of recruiting and developing versatile defensive backs who can be cross trained at multiple positions in the secondary means the talent and depth at this level of the defense is in great shape entering the spring.

A big reason for that is the Longhorns signing the best defensive back recruiting class in the modern history of the program. Texas signed the highest-rated defensive back class in the nation in the 2024 class, which added multiple immediate impact blue-chips to the secondary since most of these guys were early enrollees this semester.

Filsaime is the highest-rated defensive back signee in the Longhorns 2024 class. And he has looked the part in the last couple of months since he arrived on campus this spring as an early enrollee.

Horns247 reported (paid content) that Filsaime has "been one of the most impressive, if not the most impressive" Longhorns freshman during winter workouts.

Filsaime has been quick to get down to work and show why he was such a highly touted five-star recruit in the 2024 class early in offseason workouts. It was already expected that Filsaime would compete with other safeties on the projected two-deep, such as redshirt junior Michael Taaffe, senior Andrew Mukuba, and sophomore Derek Williams.

The impressive start to offseason workouts for Filsaime further confirms the expectation that he will compete to lock down a spot in the safety rotation on the two-deep entering spring camp next week.
