After landing a trio of important defensive commitments in the 2025 recruiting class in the first half of the month of July, Texas football is up to 14 pledges for this cycle. Texas is likely looking at anywhere between 15-17 commitments in the 2025 class when the calendar turns from July to August in a few weeks.

Flip season could be around the corner soon for Texas football targets in the 2025 class

Texas has essentially closed the book on recruiting position groups like EDGE, running back, and quarterback for 2025 at this point of the offseason. But Texas still needs to focus on wide receiver, defensive line, and defensive back recruiting to truly get each key position group checked off the list for this cycle.

Wide receiver and defensive line recruiting have specifically had challenges this summer. Texas has missed on multiple top priority defensive linemen and wide receivers in the class of 2025 from recent decisions this summer.

It's very likely that head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns must turn to chipping away at key flip targets in the 2025 class this fall to round out this cycle before signing day in December.

Myron Charles, DL (FSU commit)

Texas's two biggest out-of-state 2025 defensive line targets this summer, four-stars Josiah Sharma and Myron Chares, both committed to other schools in the last few weeks. Sharma picked the Oregon Ducks and Charles went with the Florida State Seminoles over Texas with their late-June announcements this summer.

OTF's Gerry Hamilton reported on July 13 (premium content) that Texas has remained in contact with both Charles and Sharma since they announced a few weeks ago.

The specific reason why I wanted to highlight Charles over Sharma among Texas's top flip targets for the 2025 cycle entering the fall is that I think it will be easier to pry him away from Florida State than it will to fracture a key part of Oregon's class. It sounds like Texas has remained persistent with Charles since he committed to Florida State on June 28.

If Florida State's class starts to fracture apart at any point this fall, that could potentially be to Texas's benefit specifically regarding Charles' recruitment and their pursuit to flip him from the Seminoles.
