The Texas women’s basketball team has made its way to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen 17 times before this postseason.

This season, Texas defeated the Drexel Dragons and the Alabama Crimson Tide in the first two rounds this March Madness. After a 40-point victory over the Dragons and 9-point win over the Tide, the Horns are scheduled to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs next.

As Vic Schaefer and the Horns hit the road for the third round of this year’s tournament, let’s take a look back at Texas’ history in the Sweet Sixteen.

Overall, the Horns have gone 11-6 in the Sweet Sixteen throughout history.

The greatest Texas basketball coach of all time, Jody Conradt led the team to 11 of its Sweet Sixteen appearances in history.

Conradt and the Horns also brought home the 1986 national title during her tenure.

Over Conradt’s 30-year career with the Longhorns, her team went 8-3 in the Sweet Sixteen. Texas made its way to three Final Fours under Conradt’s reign.

Karen Aston coached the Longhorns for nearly a decade and took Texas to the Sweet Sixteen four times.

From 2015-18, the Horns had consecutive appearances in the Sweet Sixteen, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2016.

While Texas never won it all under Aston, they did accumulate a handful of impressive postseason runs.

Texas’ current head coach Vic Schaefer is in his fourth season with the Longhorns and he has only fallen short of the Sweet Sixteen once so far.

In 2021 and 2022, the Horns made their way to the Elite Eight before heartbreakingly losing. In 2023, Schaefer’s team fell one game short of the Sweet Sixteen. This year, they’re returning to the Sweet Sixteen once again.
