Three-star Pearland (TX) Shadow Creek linebacker Anthony Williams has backed off his commitment to Texas football in the 2025 class, he announced on social media on April 4.
3-Star OLB Anthony Williams backs off his commitment to Texas football
It was just a few months ago that Williams announced his commitment to Texas in the 2025 class on New Year's Day 2024. He announced his pledge to the Longhorns on the same day that Texas was facing the Washington Huskies in the College Football Playoff semifinal game at the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
One major factor that has changed in this recruitment since Williams committed to the Longhorns on Jan. 1 was the personnel on the defensive staff. Texas hired former Arizona Wildcats defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen to replace Jeff Choate (who took the head coaching job at Nevada this offseason) as the co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach.
Williams included the following message in the post on his X account on the evening of April 4 regarding his decommitment from Texas.
"First off, I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to play this game and have the chance to play at the next level. The University of Texas has been nothing but great to me and I can’t thank them enough, but I have made the decision to decommit from The University of Texas. My recruitment is officially reopened."
Before he re-opened his recruitment, Williams had scheduled multiple visits in the last couple of weeks, including one to Fort Worth to see the TCU Horned Frogs.
He also told 247Sports that the Baylor Bears, Florida Gators, Texas A&M Aggies, UCLA Bruins, and TCU are the schools that are "standing out" to him this spring.
After Williams' decommitment, the Longhorns have pledges from four recruits in the 2025 class. Four-star Texarkana (TX) Pleasant Grove edge rusher/athlete Lance Jackson and four-star Melbourne (FL) Eau Gallie defensive lineman Brandon Brown are Texas's two remaining commitments in the 2025 class on defense.
Four-star Saraland (AL) quarterback KJ Lacey and four-star Calhoun (GA) tight end Emaree Winston are Texas's two 2025 commitments on the offensive side of the ball.
