Texas women's basketball: Shaylee Gonzales leads UT to big win over Jackson St

It was announced before the game that Longhorns Junior guard Rori Harmon wouldn't play against Jackson State. Senior guard Shaylee Gonzales would step up in her place, leading the Longhorns to a huge win over the Tigers at the Moody Center Wednesday night.

Texas Women's Basketball fans were probably shocked to find out before the game that Junior guard Rori Harmon wouldn't suit up against the Jackson State Tigers. The Longhorns could have rested Harmon tonight, and it wouldn't have made a difference in the score as the Longhorns dominated the Tigers 92-57.

Texas Longhorns Women's Basketball vs. Jackson State Tigers: First Quarter

Jackson State won the opening tip-off to start the game. Freshman forward Madison Booker would open the scoring for the Longhorns on a jumper. The Tigers are challenging the Longhorns on the defensive end, attacking the basket aggressively. They would also get their first lead four minutes into the game tonight.

Senior guard Shay Holle would prevent the Tigers from getting an easy basket by blocking the shot. Texas Women's Basketball Head Coach Vic Schaefer rarely removes his jacket in the first quarter. He took it off 6 minutes into the first quarter as his team looked sluggish from the holiday break. The Longhorns would go on an 18-0 run to end the first quarter.

Texas Longhorns Women's Basketball vs. Jackson State Tigers: Second Quarter

The Longhorns would have some issues on offense to start the second quarter. The Tigers would take advantage, going on a 5-3 run in the opening minutes. Schaefer got close to getting a technical foul called on him for arguing a foul on the Longhorns. Holle has stepped up for Harmon's absence tonight, hitting another three-point shot to get the offense going again.

The Tigers did a good job shutting down lanes to the basket against the Longhorns. Holle would hit another jumper as she produced points for the Longhorns in the second quarter. Gonzales's two three-pointers in the final minutes of the second quarter would give the Longhorns a 25-point lead going into halftime.

Texas Longhorns Women's Basketball vs. Jackson State Tigers: Third Quarter

Tigers Senior guard Ti'lan Boler would score the first points of the third period. After having a rough start in the third quarter, Senior forward DeYona Gatson would score the first basket for the Longhorns. Both teams have played agressive, fighting for loose balls and forcing turnovers. The Longhorns would lead 50-33 at the media timeout midway through the quarter. Longhorns would lead the Tigers 65-35 going into the final quarter.

Texas Longhorns Women's Basketball vs. Jackson State Tigers: Fourth Quarter

Sophomore forward Amina Muhammed would get the basket and draw a foul to begin the fourth quarter. Gonzales would force the Tigers to take a timeout and try to disrupt the Longhorns' momentum. Gaston continues to get to the basket and make the Tigers pay. The backup players for the Longhorns would start coming into the game with four minutes left. The Longhorns would win 92-57 and move to 13-0 overall. The Longhorns will take on the Baylor Bears on Dec. 30 at 1 PM as they open up district play this weekend.
