Texas WR Johntay Cook had 'really good summer' in workouts
In roughly five days, Texas football will return to the practice fields for preseason camp in preparation for the start of the 2024 regular season and the inaugural campaign in the SEC. Players will report for the start of training camp in a few days, meaning football is just around the corner in Austin.
Johntay Cook entering preseason camp on a high note for Texas football
One of the deepest position groups for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns entering fall camp is the receiving corps. Texas had to replace all three starters in the receiving corps, and did so by reloading via the NCAA Transfer Portal and developing returning talent on campus from last year's team.
A big-time breakout candidate for the Longhorns in the receiving corps this fall is sophomore Johntay Cook II. The second-year wideout and former five-star regularly took first and second-team reps in practice during spring camp.
Cook is on a trajectory to be one of Texas's top wideouts for this season. He's gotten bigger and has another year of experience in the program to learn Sarkisian's offense and expand his route tree.
Inside Texas reported on July 26 that Cook "had a really good summer" for the Longhorns in 7-on-7 work and in the strength and conditioning program. Cook reportedly continued to add weight to his frame in a good way this summer. And he looks to be an even more formidable and consistent target in the passing game for redshirt junior quarterback Quinn Ewers entering fall camp.
Sarkisian talked about the possibility of having to expand his wide receiver rotation for live-game action this upcoming season at SEC Media Days.
"We're going to play more receivers. I think the length of the season and because of not having all of the rapport with Quinn, some of that we'll have to feel out as games go. It is a very talented room, for sure, and we've got three great transfers."
There is just too much talent in this receiving corps for Sarkisian and Chris Jackson not to have a rotation that is limited to just three or four guys this fall. Between the three transfers Sarkisian and Jackson added from the portal early this offseason and the underclassmen in the fold (i.e. Ryan Wingo, Cook, and DeAndre Moore), Texas has too many capable weapons to not expand the rotation.
