The SEC chose the wrong UT… Texas trumps Tennessee and that’s just the truth
By Sam Fariss
The ultimate wrong has occurred and it has been done to the one and only University of Texas.
Yes, also known as UT.
Since the Longhorns joined the SEC, there was an obvious issue at foot.
Both Texas and Tennessee have gone by UT but now they share a conference and that can’t go on for any longer.
The SEC had to make a decision:
Which historied sports program would be referred to as UT and which one would get snubbed?
Last week, following four days of the SEC media days, the conference released its preseason media polls.
The decision had been made.
Tennessee was listed as ‘UT’ while Texas was listed as ‘TEX.’
The University of Texas, the UT, had been snubbed.
To begin with, the University of Texas is nearly twice the size of the University of Tennessee. UT enrolls nearly 52,000 students while TENN has an enrollment of just over 28,000.
Secondly, the athletic departments were founded just months apart so there is no argument for one being around for much longer than the other.
Sure, the University of Tennessee was founded in 1794 and UT wasn’t founded until 1883 but the Austin culture is a staple in college sports, Knoxville is still making a name for itself.
Texas has so many iconic figures like Kevin Durant, Matthew McConaughey, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Janis Joplin, Jon Hamm, Roger Clemens, and (most recently) Glenn Powell.
Tennessee has Peyton Manning, Candace Parker, and… um… Scott Kelly! The politician and former astronaut…
Anyways.
UT is Texas and Texas is UT. The SEC made a mistake and that’s just the truth.
