Vic Schaefer gives Texas an advantage entering the SEC
By Brian Sweet
Before we get to the article, I want to congratulate Freshman forward Madison Booker. Over the weekend, it was announced that Madison Booker won the Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award. That's a prestigious award to win after your first season in college basketball. Some great players were nominated for the award, along with Booker.
Texas women's basketball has high expectations under head coach Vic Schaefer entering the SEC in 2024-25
She will do amazing things in her second year as a Texas Longhorn. They will need her as they become official members of the SEC on July 1.
Texas Women's Basketball had an unexpected end to their season, losing in the Elite Eight to the North Carolina Wolfpack. It was a season that no one expected them to have after Junior guard Rori Harmon tore her ACL in practice.
It would have been sweet to make it to the Final Four in Cleveland, Ohio, but let's be down to earth for a second. They probably would have lost to South Carolina. The Gamecocks are a well-disciplined team that went on to win the NCAA Women's Basketball Title.
As they enter uncharted territory in SEC Women's Basketball this fall, one thing gives them an advantage over the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas Longhorns Women's Basketball Head Coach Vic Schaefer used to coach at Mississippi State before moving to Austin. He coached eight seasons for the Bulldogs and finished with a 221-62 (83-39 SEC) record. He's been nicknamed the "Secretary of Defense" due to his defense while coaching in the SEC. He knows what to expect from the other teams in the SEC, even though there might be some new head coaches since he's left.
The Longhorns might have some tough teams in their first season in the SEC. They might take on the defending National Champions, the South Carolina Gamecocks, or the Kim Mulkey-led LSU Tigers. It will be interesting to see their first SEC Conference schedule.
However, whatever teams they face next season, they will be ready for the challenge because of Schaefer and his experience in this conference. It will be a fun season next year, and who knows, the Longhorns could upset the Gamecocks and win their first SEC Title.
