Where Greg McElroy ranked Texas ahead of the 2024 season

Greg McElroy thinks Texas is very capable of returning to the College Football Playoff in its inaugural season in the SEC in 2024.

Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian are expected to contend for an SEC title and a spot in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff this upcoming season. Coming off a Big 12 Championship and the program's first-ever College Football Playoff appearance in 2023, Texas looks like a true contender,first-ever with over half of its starters returning on both sides of the ball for this season.

Greg McElroy projects Texas football as a top 5 preseason team for 2024

The early preseason rankings from around the college football media landscape reflect the high expectations the Longhorns have entering preseason camp for 2024. Pretty much every way-too-early preseason rankings for the upcoming campaign puts the Longhorns in the top five or 10 teams.

Greg McElroy projected the Longhorns as the No. 4 team in his preseason rankings for the 2024 college football season on his podcast "Always College Football" this week. Here is the complete top 10 for McElroy's preseason top 25 that he released on July 11.

1. Ohio State

2. Georgia

3. Oregon

4. Texas

5. Alabama

6. Notre Dame

7. Ole Miss

8. Penn State

9. Mizzou

10. Tennessee

The SEC dominated the list of top 10 and the top 25 preseason teams in McElroy's rankings that he dropped on Thursday morning. Six of the top 10 and 10 of the top 25 teams in his rankings are from the SEC.

Texas is also one of three top five teams McElroy projected from the SEC for the 2024 preseason.

Led by third-year starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, Texas is ready for the weekly grind of playing the best of the best week in and week out in the SEC in their inaugural season in the conference. Texas and the Oklahoma Sooners left the Big 12 for the SEC in 2024, expanding the conference to 16 teams and adding two more top-25 caliber squads to the fold for this fall.
