The Texas Longhorns earned a second-place finish in the Big 12, only trailing the Oklahoma Sooners. Claiming the two seed heading into the conference tournament, Texas has also earned byes in the first and second rounds.

Due to the byes, the Horns have a week-long gap between their last regular season game and their first game in the tournament.

While a week isn’t a long time, with how frequently college basketball players are used to competing, does Texas run the risk of being rusty on Saturday?

In the quarterfinals, the Longhorns are set to face either the seven-seed Kansas Jayhawks or the 10-seed BYU Cougars.

Let’s take a look at how the Horns performed against Kansas and BYU during the regular season:

Texas women’s basketball vs. Kansas

In the two teams’ only matchup during the regular season, Texas hosted the Jayhawks in Austin. Coming off of a three-point loss to Kansas State, the Horns were out for blood and annihilated Kansas.

Winning 91-56, Texas has a lights-out game. Scoring 22 or more points in three of the four quarters and bringing down 36 rebounds, the Horns out-hustled and out-performed the Jayhawks.

Kansas defeated BYU in both regular season games this year by a combined point difference of 22 points.

Texas women’s basketball vs. BYU

Texas also played BYU just once this season and it was in the Horns’ arena. When BYU came to town on March 2, the Longhorns were more than ready for the Cougars.

The game was tied at 14 after the first quarter but Texas quickly squashed any hopes that BYU could stay in the game. At the half, the Horns were up by seven points, and after the final buzzer, Texas walked away with a resounding 25-point victory.

This Big 12 matchup was the teams’ final game of the regular season and led to the Cougars being knocked down to the tenth seed in the conference tournament.

The 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Tournament is being held in Kansas City, MO. Texas’ quarterfinal game will take place on March 9 at 5:30 p.m. CT.
