The biggest position of need for the Longhorns to upgrade on special teams is punter. Texas's punting game was inconsistent this season with true freshman Michael Kern and sophomore Ian Ratliff handling the punter duties.

Special teams coordinator Jeff Banks and the Longhorns will almost certainly be looking to upgrade the punter spot with the special teams unit this upcoming offseason.

Texas ranked 75th in the FBS this season in average starting field position on defense (per College Football Data).

The problem for the Longhorns is that finding a proven and capable punter at the P4 conference level is a difficult task in the transfer portal. Many other P4 programs are also punter hunting in the portal to upgrade the special teams unit and field position battle.

Among the punters available in the portal, one of the best and most proven from the P4 is former Michigan Wolverines senior punter/kicker transfer Tommy Doman. An All-Big Ten Third-Team selection in 2023, Doman has ranked among the three highest-graded punters in the conference in each of the past two campaigns for the Wolverines.

In Michigan's win over USC during the regular season, Doman had a whopping five punts of at least 50 yards for the Wolverines on special teams.

Doman has averaged at least 42 yards per punt and averaged at least four seconds of hangtime in his two seasons handling the punting duties for Michigan.

Other punter names with experience reliably handling the punting duties in FBS in college to watch for the Longhorns in the portal are Oklahoma State's Hudson Kaak, Utah's Jack Bouwmeester, and Washington State's Nick Haberer.
