Texas stormed into the SEC Tournament and defeated the Vanderbilt Commodores in the first round. Then, the Horns had to face their in-state rivals, the Texas A&M Aggies, in the second round. In the highly physical rivalry matchup, the Longhorns shocked the nation as they built a 33-27 lead over the Aggies after the first half.
The second half was a different story as Texas A&M dominated off the glass. However, the main story of the second half was the officiating. Throughout the two halves, the officials called nearly 50 combined personal fouls on the two teams, breaking up any sense of momentum in the game.
At the end of regulation, the teams were tied at 73, and the postseason edition of the Lone Star Showdown was heading into overtime. After two overtime periods, only one Texas team was flying home while the other moved onto the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament.
Texas A&M flew to a quick 5-point lead over Texas, but the Longhorns' defense showed up when it was most needed. With just 19.7 seconds remaining, the Horns trailed by one point and an Aggie, Pharrel Payne, was heading to the charity stripe. He sank one of two free throws and Texas was down by two.
One the next possession, forward Kadin Shedrick was all alone under the basket and caught a beautiful lob from Tramon Mark for the dunk, to tie the game at 79 and send it into a second OT. The tie game remained through 81 points apiece as freshman guard Tre Johnson fouled A&M's Wade Taylor IV to the line for two made free throws, putting the Aggies ahead by two points.
Then, Texas' offense got rolling as Johnson drained a three-point shot from the logo and Jordan Pope drained a two-point jumper to put the Longhorns up 89-85 with less than a minute remaining.
By the end of the second overtime period (50 minutes of in-game action), the No. 13-seed Texas Longhorns were moving onto the quarterfinal round of the SEC Tournament after upsetting the No. 5-seed Texas A&M Aggies.
Texas defeated Texas A&M 94-89 (2OT) and moved on to face the No. 4-seed Tennessee Volunteers who are led by former Longhorn head coach Rick Barnes.
