In yesterday's press conference, quite a few players spoke to the media regarding a plethora of different topics, but it was Ryan Wingo who commanded the most attention amongst the members of the team.
Texas fans have been waiting for an update regarding his wrist injury that hampered him in 2025. He attempted to play through it, but he ultimately couldn't, and he had to have surgery on it shortly after the season ended.
Wingo finally decided to give the people what they wanted:
"It's getting better for sure. Some stuff I am getting held out of, but it's getting better. I'm catching and stuff like that."
Not only do we get a better picture of where things stand with his rehab process, but he also gave us a little insight into how things are going for him in general.
A question came up regarding how the game has slowed down for him:
"I think coverages. I was good at reading coverages throughout my freshman and sophomore year, but really being able to look at the opposite safety and say 'I know when he does this, I've got to do this' type of thing. Looking at coverages more has really been the biggest thing for me. And I've got the playbook down like the back of my hand."
This was excellent to hear from Wingo and despite what he said, it seemed like he solely relied on athleticism to make plays on the field, regardless of coverage types, over the first two years of his career at Texas. Hearing him speak about leveraging safeties and modifying routes to take advantage of what the defense is giving him is a huge step for Wingo.
All he was missing as a player was the on-field processing, and it definitely sounds like the coaching staff has been working hard to improve that aspect of his game.
