After heading into the matchup with a head full of steam, Texas wasn't able to close out the game against Auburn due to a couple of main reasons. The most impactful one is something that the Longhorns have had consistent trouble with all season long.
Since the beginning of the year, Texas has had trouble on defense, especially in transition. When opposing teams are being aggressive and driving down the court, the only thing that the team has been able to do is foul. The Longhorns are consistently caught out of position in multiple phases of the game, and instead of putting themselves in positions to take charges or forcing ball-handlers to change course, they just end up smacking the opponent.
Texas HC Sean Miller talked about this in his postgame presser last night as well:
"They were 22/28 from the free throw line in the 2nd half. That's almost impossible to do in a college game. But I give them a lot of credit. They put our guys in a position to foul and we fouled the shit out of them."

If one thing's for sure about this season's men's basketball team, it's that it's been one of the weakest defensive teams in the country as of late. The most frustrating part about it is that a lot of it should be fixable, but when you allow teams to consistently get to the free-throw line for "free" points, it makes things so much harder.
Coach Miller has been harping on it all season, but nothing seems to change. He also had this to say following the Longhorns' loss to Kentucky on the 21st.
“We have a virus called fouling…We will foul the living s*** out of you. We will foul a 3-point shooter, we will foul at the end of the clock…you describe the foul, and the team I’m coaching will commit it.”
This Texas basketball team will continue to struggle and lose close games against top-tier teams until they begin to limit the unnecessary fouls.
