Well, the first quarter of Texas's game against the Florida Gators could have been worse. Instead of allowing two touchdowns, the Longhorns only allowed a touchdown and a field goal.
The offense went scoreless, punting the ball at the end of the only two drives it had in the first quarter. Yet, head coach Steve Sarkisian had high hopes for his team, even with a 10-0 deficit as the second quarter kicked off.
"We had some good rhythm on the first drive," Sarkisian said, despite the Horns punting the ball after just seven plays and 30 total yards.
Almost immediately, fans took to social media to express their distaste and frustration surrounding their head coach, who has repeatedly refused to hand over play calling to an offensive coordinator, despite Kyle Flood being named to the OC position in 2021.
Texas offensive struggles in first half versus Florida
Over the first three drives of the game, Texas quarterback Arch Manning was back to struggling with his accuracy and in-game decisions. He threw four completions on eight attempts for just 24 yards and zero touchdowns.
Unsurprisingly, he led the Longhorns' rushing game with 18 yards, alongside Ryan Niblett's three yards on the ground. Veteran RB Quintrevion Wisner was finally back from injury, but lost two yards on his first carry of the game.
Meanwhile, Florida quarterback DJ Lagway (who had repeatedly been grouped with Manning as two of the most disappointing players so far this year) completed nearly 68 percent of his passes for over 50 yards.
The Gators' running backs combined for 101 yards over their first three drives, with sophomore Jadan Baugh scoring the only touchdown in the first quarter.
