A lot of Texas fans can agree that even though the Longhorns are now 5-2, last night's game kind of felt like a loss. Despite coming up with quite a few big stops, the defense looked completely lost in the 2nd half.
Pete Kwiatkowski's defense gave up 395 total yards of offense, 26 first downs, and allowed Kentucky QB Cutter Boley to complete 80% of his pass attempts on the night. Though these stats are absolutely atrocious, it wasn't completely the defense's fault. In fact, about 80% of the problem against the Wildcats could be attributed to Steve Sarkisian and the offense.
It was undoubtedly one of the worst offensive playcalling performances that the Longhorns have had in a long time, and thankfully, it was against a team like Kentucky. The fact that Sarkisian was basically complaining that the offense was stuck in 3rd & long all night made Longhorns fans everywhere want to punch a wall.
“When you play in 3rd and long, then you lose the flow of the game and the rhythm of the game. I think we missed some opportunities in the run game to be better.”
These are the types of statements that make Texas fans respond like this:
To lose something implies you had it at some point.

steve sarkisian needs to drop his ego and hire an offensive coordinator and never call plays again.

The fact that these words came out of his mouth after that monstrosity of a game is mind-numbing.
Steve Sarkisian and Steve Sarkisian alone is responsible for the crazy, inexplicable types of playcalling that kept the offensive behind the chains all night long on crucial 2nd and 3rd downs.
He called a long-developing trick play on 3rd & 3 on one of the first "big" 3rd downs of the night, and we all know how that went. These are the types of things that Sark does instead of playing it safe and having a plan for each down. Yes, Arch Manning definitely had his fair share of misses that attributed to the lack of success but the schematics of the offensive game plan was unacceptably bad.
"We've got to quite the self-inflicted wounds. You guys see it when there's penalties...there's little things that we're not doing offensively."
Yes, the penalties were also bad but when you're calling plays that are designed for early downs like deep passing plays on 3rd & short, a lot of things are going to go wrong. Those "little things" that aren't being done offensively are directly tied to the playcalling.
Needless to say, Texas' offense needs to completely redeem themselves next week against Mississippi State in order for Longhorn Nation to feel better about what's going on in 2025.
