Sydir Mitchell decides to return to Texas
Horns247 reports on Dec. 12 that redshirt freshman Texas football defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell has decided to stay on the Forty Acres after announcing his plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal earlier this week.
Texas football gets good news with DT Sydir Mitchell deciding to return to school
On Wednesday (Dec. 11), Mitchell had announced his plans to enter the transfer portal during the winter window.
Mitchell spent the past two seasons at Texas. He appeared in nine games in the two seasons he's played for the Longhorns, registering seven combined tackles, one tackle for loss, and four defensive stops.
In 2023, Mitchell was able to retain his redshirt after playing four games. He saw action in two Big 12 conference games in the 2023 season, including in the conference championship game against Oklahoma State.
Mitchell saw his defensive snap count double for the Longhorns this fall, taking three dozen defensive snaps over five games in 2024. He played in SEC games against the Florida Gators and Kentucky Wildcats in the regular season, and saw action in two defensive snaps in the SEC Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs last weekend.
He registered four combined tackles, one tackle for loss, and two defensive stops this season.
It's big news for the Longhorns to get Mitchell back. Texas is very thin in the defensive tackle room for the 2025 season, and Mitchell was one of the few nose tackles who has live-game snaps projected to return to school this upcoming offseason with Bill Norton due to exhaust his eligibility soon.
In the past few days, the Longhorns have lost three defensive tackles to the transfer portal, including redshirt sophomore Aaron Bryant, redshirt sophomore Jaray Bledsoe, and senior Tia Savea.
Mitchell joins true freshmen Melvin Hills and Alex January for returning to Texas at defensive tackle for 2025. Texas and Kenny Baker signed a tremendous high school defensive tackle recruiting class for 2025, including three blue-chip recruits.
But the Longhorns need more depth in the trenches in the SEC at defensive tackle, making Mitchell's return to Texas significant as he's got three years of eligibility remaining.
