Texas’ 2027 recruiting plan becomes clear with latest offer to in-state 6’8” OT

It's getting easier to see how Steve Sarkisian is attacking the 2027 recruiting class, especially when it comes to the offensive line.

There appears to be a theme when it comes to the way that Texas is handling its 2027 class so far, and though the Longhorns just offered another 6'8" offensive tackle, it's not about size. Steve Sarkisian and Co. are seeking out offensive linemen with incredibly high upside and fairly solid "floors".

This perfectly describes Gunter High School (Gunter, TX) OT Caleb Siler, whom Texas just offered a scholarship to. The 6'8", 290-pound 3-star offensive tackle impressed Texas OL Coach Kyle Flood during his recent unofficial visit to Austin in April, and the Longhorns' staff knows that they have to stay on top of Siler, as he has recently begun to fly up recruiting boards.

He just received offers from Nebraska, Duke, and UCLA, and he has an official visit scheduled with South Carolina in June.

No blue chip, no problem

The up-and-coming offensive tackle moves incredibly well for his size, which is unusual for taller offensive linemen with the type of length that he has. Having longer legs usually affects short-area quickness and agility, but Siler looks pretty smooth in that aspect.

He's played both left and right tackle for Gunter HS, being equally as dominant on both sides. Siler's pretty raw when it comes to the technical side of playing offensive tackle, but he makes up for it with effort and strength at the point of attack. The footwork in pass protection is there, but he needs to refine his upper body movement and overall hand placement.

The most impressive area of Siler's game is his run blocking. Despite being so tall, he does a great job of maintaining an advantageous pad-level throughout each block, and when he doesn't, he's able to recover due to his core strength and ability to wall off defenders.

Overall, Texas appears to be going after offensive linemen who are somewhat raw but have sky-high potential in the 2027 class. Steve Sarkisian and Kyle Flood could be trying to recruit offensive linemen who won't cost them an arm and a leg to bring in, so that they can spend most of their NIL budget on skill players.

This theory is also supported by the fact that they have more offers out to other 3-star linemen, and they already have two 3-star linemen committed for 2027.
