While the Texas men's and women's basketball teams are heading to the NCAA Tournament, the Longhorn softball and baseball teams are doing some dancing of their own.
Over the weekend, the two teams opened their conference seasons (in the SEC for the first time) with series sweeps to extend their winning streaks to 17. Yes, both the Texas baseball team and the Texas softball team have a 17-game winning streak at the moment. Not too shabby, right?
Texas baseball sweeps the Mississippi State Bulldogs
The Longhorn men opened their conference season with a three-game series against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville.
After a close first game, in which Texas earned an 8-7 victory, the Horns found their footing on the mound and allowed just four runs over the next two games. In game two, Texas secured a 5-3 victory with a seventh-inning home run by Max Belyeu.
In the third game, Texas earned its 17th win of the season with a 4-1 win over Mississippi State. Next, the team will host the UTSA Roadrunners before the No. 2 LSU Tigers come to town for a three-game series.
Texas softball sweeps the Florida Gators
The softball team started its first-ever SEC season with a three-game series against the Florida Gators in Gainesville. The third game, which wouldn't see the first pitch until 6 p.m. CT on Monday, March 17, had yet to be played when the weekend wrapped up.
However, in the first two games, the No. 1 Horns hit well as they took down the No. 3 Gators behind a total of 20 runs.
In the first game, Texas secured a dominant 7-2 victory as pitchers Teagan Kavan and Mac Morgan combined for the win. The second game was closer until the fifth inning when. Katie Cimusz hit a home run, which she also did just one inning later. By the end of seven innings, Texas walked away with a 13-7 win.
