No. 5: This team has a second-weekend ceiling
This Texas team is talented. Head coach Rodney Terry and his staff have assembled a terrific mix of returning talent, transfers, and freshmen to create a roster that can compete with the best in the country.
However, the lack of continuity among these players will be something to watch throughout the rest of the season. Does the ball move better on the offensive end? How do they respond to adversity? These are questions that will affect the ceiling of this team.
I can assure you that wasting Tre Johnson's lone season in Austin will be a cause of deep regret if Texas isn't able to find their footing in conference play. He is one of the most talented players in the country and a guy who can truly change the outcome of any game he plays in.
The talent of this team, paired with some terrific spurts of basketball in the non-con, has me believing Texas could make a run to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons.
That said, given the strength of the SEC and Texas's struggles against upper-echelon competition, the Horns could just as well miss the tournament entirely.
I expect this team to come together and pick up some memorable wins over the final three months of the season. If they get into the dance, a team that rarely turns the ball over and shoots lights out from beyond the arc has a great chance to advance deep into the tournament.
Regardless of how it plays out, Texas basketball's inaugural season in the SEC should be entertaining.
