Texas basketball reportedly dominates TCU in closed scrimmage, 80-52
For the first time during the preseason, Texas basketball and head coach Rodney Terry had a closed scrimmage against the TCU Horned Frogs on Oct. 19. It looks like Texas demolished head coach Jamie Dixon and the Horned Frogs by nearly 30 points last weekend.
Rodney Terry and Texas basketball destroy TCU in preseason closed scrimmage on Oct. 19
Per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports/College Hoops Today, Texas beat TCU in a closed scrimmage last week by a score of 80-52. The closed scrimmage took place in San Antonio, TX, this past Saturday.
While TCU and Dixon suffered some key losses among top-producing starters, including leading rebounder and scorer Emanuel Miller, and the leading distributors Avery Anderson III and Jameer Nelson Jr, this is still a potential momentum-builder for all the new additions for the Longhorns this preseason.
It sounds like the Longhorns got big contributions from the likes of the hyped-up freshman guard/wing Tre Johnson, senior forward Jayson Kent, and senior shooting guard Tramon Mark.
Texas only faced TCU once last season, topping the Horned Frogs by double digits on the road in Fort Worth, TX, on Feb. 3, 2024, in their final regular season matchup as Big 12 conference foes before the Longhorns left for the SEC this past summer.
The scrimmage against TCU last weekend was the first of two closed scrimmages that the Longhorns have scheduled during the preseason. The other closed scrimmage is scheduled for next weekend in Austin to host the Colorado Buffaloes.
Terry spoke on leaving the Big 12 after over two decades for the Longhorns playing in that conference, ahead of the inaugural season for Texas in the SEC in the upcoming 2024-25 campaign.
"We’re excited about joining the SEC. It’s a league that I know our fan base is super excited about. I’d be remiss not to thank the Big 12 for our 28 years. I was a part of the first year of the Big 12 as an assistant at Baylor University. We had some great years in that league. But we’re excited about where we’re going and what we’re doing."
- Rodney Terry
Terry and the Longhorns finished last season with a record of 21-13 (9-9 Big 12) in Texas's final campaign as a member of the Big 12 conference. Texas won at least one NCAA Tournament game for the third year, and the second in a row under Terry as the head coach (interim/full time), this past spring.
Texas ranks in the top 20 in both major preseason polls, ahead of the start of the 2024-25 inaugural regular season in the SEC for the Longhorns. Terry's squad was picked to finish seventh in the SEC media preseason poll last week.
Texas opens the 2024-25 regular season against the Ohio State Buckeyes at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV, on Nov. 4, as part of the event for the Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas Opening Night.
