Texas CB Jay'Vion Cole enters the transfer portal
Junior Texas football cornerback Jay'Vion Cole will be entering the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to a post on his X account on Dec. 10. Cole is the second Texas player to announce their intentions to enter the transfer portal today, and the seventh in total.
Losses continue for Texas football to the portal in CB Jay'Vion Cole
Cole and senior defensive tackle Tia Savea were the two Longhorns players who announced they will be entering the transfer portal on Dec. 10.
Both Cole and Savea spent one season at Texas after transferring from programs out closer to or on the West Coast. Cole spent one season with the Longhorns after transferring from the San Jose State Spartans last offseason.
Cole wasn't able to see the field much for the Longhorns this fall. Due to intense competition on the depth chart at the cornerback position, and additional reps taken by corners like Gavin Holmes and freshman Kobe Black, Cole only saw action in four games this season for the Longhorns.
Texas brought Cole in last offseason from the portal during the spring transfer window to fill a depth need at the cornerback position. But Texas ended up moving senior defensive back Jahdae Barron from the star position to cornerback, which worked out well for the team in the end, as he leads the SEC in interceptions and is a Thorpe Award finalist.
Cole played four games for the Longhorns this season, registering one tackle and an interception in Week 4 against UL-Monroe.
At San Jose State in 2023, Cole was one of the top performing cornerbacks in the Mountain West Conference. He registered 38 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions, 10 pass breakups, and one fumble recovery for the Spartans in the 2023 season.
The other five Longhorns players who have entered the transfer portal for the winter window are redshirt sophomore DL Jaray Bledsoe, redshirt freshman EDGE Tausili Akana, redshirt freshman OLB Derion Gullette, redshirt sophomore DL Aaron Bryant, and sophomore wide receiver Johntay Cook II.
