Early in the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 3, Texas defensive back Wardell Mack was arrested in Travis County on charges of Driving While Intoxicated and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

The prosecutor rejected the possession charge but decided to move forward with the DW.. Mack, who redshirted his true freshman season after appearing in just four games, was released on bond, which was listed at $3,000 by the Travis County online records.

Travis County is home to Austin, TX, where the Texas Longhorns are located, but beyond the arrest taking place close to 1 a.m. on Wednesday, the exact location of the incident was not listed.

Following the arrest, the Texas football program shared a statement with the public regarding the situation at hand. It was unclear if Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was involved in writing the statement.

"We're aware of the situation with Wardell Mack. We will continue to monitor the legal process, and the situation will be handled internally at the appropriate time."

During his true freshman season, Mack earned just two total tackles and one interception. He did not appear in Texas's season opener against the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday.

While Mack was not expected to earn a starting role this season, he was projected to earn a significant increase in playing time, especially with the departure of defensive back stars Jahdae Barron and Andrew Mukuba.

"At that position, we've got some really cool options, and we're fortunate the guys that are in there right now with Graceson [Littleson] and they're both playing good football," Sarkisian said.

Mack was a four-star prospect out of high school and was raised in Marrero, LA, which is just outside of New Orleans. After initially committing to the Florida Gators, he flipped his commitment to the Longhorns.

The team has yet to share whether or not they will take any further action following Mack's arrest and subsequent charge.

Texas hosts San Jose State in its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ABC.
