It was just announced that former All-American running back Chris Gilbert, who was one of the best ball-carriers of all time for Texas, died today at the age of 79.
He was a dominant fixture in the Longhorns' offense from 1966 to 1968, rushing for over 1,000 yards in each of his three varsity seasons in Austin. He was named to the All-Conference team three times, and was an All-American and the Southwest Conference Player of the Year in 1968 when he rushed for 1,132 yards.
Gilbert was inducted into the University of Texas Hall of Honor in 1978, the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in 1990, and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
