Texas basketball and head coach Rodney Terry were missing a big piece of the starting lineup on Dec. 15 in a dominant 121-57 win over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions at the Moody Center in Austin.
Freshman G Tre Johnson is "day-to-day" with a hip injury for Texas basketball
True freshman guard Tre Johnson missed the game today against Arkansas-Pine Bluff due to an injury that wasn't announced by the Longhorns until right before tip-off this afternoon.
A school spokesperson announced before the game today that Johnson was out due to a hip injury. Terry did give an update on Johnson's status in the postgame press conference after the win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
After the game, Terry said Johnson's status with the hip injury is "day-to-day".
"Tre’s day to day right now and we have the best trainer in the country and he has the best people and resources to continue to work with him,"Rodney Terry on Tre Johnson
Coming into today, Johnson was the SEC's leading scorer, averaging 19.9 points per game through 10 outings. He's had a stellar start to his true freshman campaign, shooting 48.0 percent from the field, 43.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 83.9 percent from the free-throw line, along with averaging 2.6 rebounds per game, 2.2 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.3 blocks.
This is the first game Johnson missed for the Longhorns this season.
The Longhorns only have two more games until the SEC opener on the road in College Station against the rival Texas A&M Aggies. But it sounds like Johnson isn't dealing with anything serious injury-wise with the hip issue, and his missing this game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff was more out of caution than anything too concerning.
"He's still a young player, so understanding recovery and taking care of his body at this juncture of his career is important, but he'll be fine. We'll be able to continue to get him right and he will back in the lineup and getting going here when time permits."Rodney Terry on Tre Johnson
Texas's two remaining non-conference games are both at the Moody Center against New Orleans on Dec. 19 and Northwestern State on Dec. 29.
