Texas gaining ground as recruiting battle heats up for in-state 2027 DL target

One of the Lonestar State's up-and-coming defensive line recruits has begun to express interest in Texas.

The Longhorns continue on their recruiting journey throughout the state of Texas, and one of the state's "late bloomers" has begun to take the CFB world by storm. 3-star Atascocita High School (Humble, TX) DT Jason Johnson has been skyrocketing up recruiting boards since his breakout sophomore season in 2024, and it sounds like Texas has been gaining ground with the 17-year old.

The 6'4", 280-pound defensive tackle was recently in Austin for an unofficial visit, and it's pretty safe to say that he had a great time based on his recent comments:

“I like this whole atmosphere. I love Texas.”

He's actually been on campus a couple of times recently and has his official visit with Texas scheduled for late June.

Johnson's been getting lots of love for his run-stopping ability, despite being on the "smaller" side when it comes to his frame. This highlights his overall strength and power at the point of attack, often times being unmovable against the run, even against double-teams. It's easy to see that he's been coached very well at Atascocita based on his overall hand movement and technique. Though it's commonly taught at the high school level, watching a prep DT dipping and dropping to a knee against combo blocks isn't seen very often in a game setting.

It's those little details that go a long way in the evaluation of a high school football prospect, and Johnson is more nuanced than quite a few other 3-star DT prospects. Johnson's expected to make his commitment decision in July, and it wouldn't be surprising at all to see him earn a 4th star by the time National Signing Day gets here.

He's already teetering on that 3/4-star edge, and with the way his recruitment's going, sites like Rivals and 247Sports could make a fairly large adjustment to his status in their final recruiting updates.
