Texas has a Titanic-sized 'trump card' in the Marcus Fakatou recruitment

The Longhorns have a secret connection to the 2027 blue-chip defensive lineman that almost no other program has.

Almost every school in America has been trying to gain ground in the recruitment of 5-star 2027 DL Marcus Fakatou over the past few months, and for good reason. The 6'6", 275-pound monster has been one of the most dominant prep-level defensive linemen in the nation, and luckily for Texas, they have a secret advantage that nobody else does.

As mentioned earlier, very few players in the 2027 class have been as dominant as Fakatou has over the past two seasons, and the craziest thing is that he's still a pretty raw player in the technical aspects of the game. Usually, elite high school prospects are given 4 and 5-star ratings because they have another aspect to their game besides just bullying opponents around physically. The fact that Fakatou's ranked so highly without that part of the equation is absolutely wild, but in a good way.

Scouts basically believe that he has so much potential that they're willing to bypass some aspects of the recruiting criteria due to his elite outlook at the next level.

One under-the-radar factor could separate Texas from the field when it comes to Marcus Fakatou

The Longhorns have developed an excellent relationship with Fakatou over the past year or so, but one of his main contacts with Texas hasn't been the coaching staff as of late; it's been true freshman DE Richard Wesley.

Wesley went to the same high school that Fakatou's currently attending (Sierra Canyon HS), and the two have been training together back home in California. Fakatou has posted multiple pictures and videos of the two on social media this year, and though it may not sound like a big deal, I can assure you that it is.

One of the biggest aspects of a high school recruit's thought process is the subject of familiarity, which is why programs do everything they can to bring in their top targets to visit multiple times before national signing day. Something as simple as knowing another player when heading into a new program is massive. Fakatou already having a fairly good relationship with another young player in the Texas football program could very well be the key to gaining his commitment.

The vibe around his commitment has already begun to favor Texas and Oregon, and that wasn't really the case until Wesley and Fakatou began working out together in the spring. Yes, NIL money will always be king, but everything else besides that could favor the Longhorns as of right now.
