Texas football has found its next running backs coach hire in former West Virginia Mountaineers running backs coach Chad Scott, according to multiple reports (including On3's Pete Nakos). Scott replaces former Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice, who took a job with the same title with the NFL's Detroit Lions earlier this offseason.
Former Big 12 assistant coach at West Virginia, Chad Scott, replaces Tashard Choice as Texas football's next running backs coach hire
This news comes after Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was busy interviewing candidates over the past week to find the Longhorns' next RB coach.
Scott spent the past six seasons at West Virginia, where he held the title of offensive coordinator and running backs coach. He had the title of co-offensive coordinator in the first three years on staff at West Virginia and was the run game coordinator in the 2022 season.
A couple of offseasons ago, ahead of the 2023 season, Scott was promoted to the title of offensive coordinator and running backs coach.
After now-former West Virginia head coach Neal Brown was let go earlier this offseason, Scott was retained by new Mountaineers' head coach Rich Rodriguez.
Matt Zenitz of 247Sports was the first to report the interest the Longhorns had in Scott as the next potential hire for Texas's running backs coach job.
Since the 2023 season as offensive coordinator, Scott has coached up multiple productive running backs at West Virginia. WVU's top two backs during the 2023 season, Jaheim White and CJ Donaldson combined for over 1,500 rushing yards and over six yards per carry in the Big 12 for the Mountaineers.
The running back duo of White and Donaldson rushed for over 1,500 yards and nearly 20 touchdowns in the 2024 season for the Mountaineers en route to leading West Virginia to another year of bowl eligibility.
Before taking the job as West Virginia's running backs coach during the 2019 offseason, he held various college coaching roles with the likes of the North Carolina Tar Heels, Kentucky Wildcats, and Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Scott is the second assistant coach hire for the Longhorns in as many weeks after Sarkisian and Texas hired Mark Orphey to replace Blake Gideon as a secondary coach on the defensive staff earlier this month.
