While it has been over two decades since the Texas Longhorns last won a National Championship in football, the program hasn't been lacking in success.

Over the last 10 years, there have been eight programs that have earned wins totaling in the double digits against top-10 teams. The Horns are one of them.

Teams with the most AP Top 10 wins since 2016

  1. Ohio State Buckeyes - 26
  2. Georgia Bulldogs - 24
  3. Alabama Crimson Tide - 18
  4. LSU Tigers - 17
  5. Clemson Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Longhorns - 11
  6. Michigan Wolverines - 10

Texas is tied with the Clemson Tigers and none other than the Oklahoma Sooners, one of their rivals, with 11 victories over teams ranked in the top-10 of the AP Top 25 Poll.

This is a huge accomplishment for the Horns. This many wins over the top teams in the nation is a clear sign that things are heading back in the correct direction in Austin.

In other words, while Texas hasn't returned to the National Championship since losing to Alabama at the end of the 2009 season, they are in great company with teams that have been able to pull that off.

Other than Oklahoma, which hasn't won a National Championship since 2000, the six other teams on the list won nine of the last 10 CFP titles.

Alabama, of course, won three of those National Championships. Georgia secured two of the titles. Clemson, LSU, Michigan, and Ohio State won one National Championship apiece over that stretch.

Of course, most recently, the Indiana Hoosiers won last season's National Championship, and that program is nowhere near this list, not finding genuine success in this century until head coach Curt Cignetti took over in 2024.

Similarly, after Mack Brown parted ways with the Longhorns, Texas struggled to find consistent success until current head coach Steve Sarkisian took over in 2021.

Now, with the 2026 season flying into focus, it could be time for the Longhorns to finally add another trophy to their case, and hopefully at least one more top-10 victory.
