Just yesterday, it was reported that the Michigan Wolverines had moved their 2027 matchup with the Eastern Michigan Eagles to Sept. 11, the very day they were originally scheduled to play none other than the Texas Longhorns.
In what would be the second meeting of a home-and-home series between Texas and Michigan, it suddenly appeared as though the Wolverines were looking for a way out.
However, less than 24 hours later, the Horns announced a schedule of their own, and it was probably one of the last things anyone expected.
The Longhorns will now kick off their 2027 season in Week 0, a newly allowable move after the FBS Oversight Committee voted to start the official season in Week 0 instead of Week 1, and instead of playing the Wolverines on Sept. 11, they will face them on Sept. 4 (Week 1).
Texas's adjusted schedule gives the Longhorns 2 byes in 2027
In the NCAA committee's ruling, the adjusted schedule allows for teams to kick off their season in Week 0, and if they do, it gives them an extra "off" week.
In other words, instead of the college football regular season taking up a 13-week window, it will be 14-weeks long, and if your first game of the year is in Week 0, then you would have just 11 opponents remaining over the next 13 weeks.
Tracking? I know, it's odd that they're still calling it Week 0, but old habits die hard.
This means that because the Horns will now play in Week 0, they could have a second BYE next season, and it will come during their always-difficult SEC schedule.
- WEEK 0: New Mexico State - Aug. 28
- WEEK 1: Michigan Wolverines - Sept. 4
- WEEK 2: UTEP Miners - Sept. 11
In all honesty, Texas really didn't change all that much; they just moved the schedule up a week. The biggest news will come when the Horns announce when their second bye week will come, with the first usually coming in the first weekend of October, ahead of the Red River Rivalry.

Then, after the three non-conference matchups conclude, the Horns will head into their usual gauntlet of a conference schedule, which will at least include another off week somewhere in there.

- HOME: Auburn Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, Kentucky Wildcats, Texas A&M Aggies
- NEUTRAL: Oklahoma Sooners (Oct. 10)
- AWAY: Alabama Crimson Tide, Arkansas Razorbacks, South Carolina Gamecocks, Vanderbilt Commodores
Texas will host Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, and Texas A&M in 2027. As per usual, the Sooners and the Longhorns will play the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The Horns will play Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt on the road.
