Texas should almost thank the AP Poll voters for where Horns landed in latest Top 25

The Texas Longhorns just suffered their second straight loss of the season, and both were to unranked opponents: the Oklahoma Sooners and Florida Gators.

Obviously, because of those losses, they have had a not-so-graceful fall from the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25 Poll, but after the Horns' loss to Florida in Week 7, Texas's spot in the latest rankings is something the team should be grateful for.

When the eighth AP Poll of the season came out, voters put Texas at No. 19, something they could arguably be undeserving of at this point.

Making the ranking almost more unbelievable, and giving the Horns' haters a stronger standing for their argument that they don't deserve to be where they are, was the fact that the Gators were ranked one spot behind the Longhorns at No. 20.

Despite Florida genuinely just beating the Horns, the Gators were still placed one spot behind them. Texas may want to send a thank-you note to the voters because they have a little more faith in this team than a lot of other people in the country, myself included.

Clearly, those wins over the Ohio State Buckeyes, who are now back in the top three, and the Tennessee Volunteers, who are now No. 11, are still carrying a lot of weight in Texas's ranking.

More chaos in the AP Top 25 Poll after Week 7

Texas and Ohio State aren't the only No. 1 teams to lose their top ranking, and the Horns are no longer the No. 1 team to lose to an unranked opponent, with the then-No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs losing to the Auburn Tigers on Saturday.

  1. Miami Hurricanes, 6-0
  2. BYU Cougars, 6-0
  3. Ohio State Buckeyes, 6-1
  4. Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 6-1
  5. Georgia Bulldogs, 6-1
  6. Indiana Hoosiers, 6-1
  7. Ole Miss Rebels, 6-1
  8. Texas Tech Red Raiders, 6-0
  9. UCLA Bruins, 6-0
  10. Utah Utes, 6-0
  11. Tennessee Volunteers, 6-1
  12. Kentucky Wildcats, 6-1
  13. Alabama Crimson Tide, 5-2
  14. Houston Cougars, 6-1
  15. Iowa Hawkeyes, 5-1
  16. USC Trojans, 6-1
  17. Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 6-1
  18. LSU Tigers, 5-2
  19. Texas Longhorns, 4-2
  20. Florida Gators, 5-2
  21. Boise State Broncos, 5-1
  22. Missouri Tigers, 5-2
  23. SMU Mustangs, 5-1
  24. Northwestern Wildcats, 5-1
  25. Arizona Wildcats, 5-1

Adding to the chaos of Week 7, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost to the BYU Cougars, the Indiana Hoosiers lost to the Buckeyes, the Alabama Crimson Tide lost to the Tennessee Volunteers, the Missouri Tigers lost to the Ole Miss Rebels, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs lost to the LSU Tigers.

Simply put, with how the first seven weeks have unfolded, the rest of the season is as uncertain as ever, and it kind of looks like being ranked No. 1 is a curse.

Texas Longhorns' remaining ranked opponents after Week 7

And, of course, with the Top 25 shakeup, the rankings of the Horns' remaining opponents changed as well. So, here is how the rest of their season looks, with Mississippi State, the Arkansas Razorbacks, and the Texas A&M Aggies being their only unranked opponents remaining:

  • vs. No. 7 Ole Miss on Saturday, Oct. 24
  • at No. 22 Missouri Tigers on Saturday, Nov. 7
  • at No. 18 LSU Tigers on Saturday, Nov. 14

Texas plays Mississippi State on Saturday, Oct. 31, and the Razorbacks on Saturday, Nov. 21. As per tradition, the Horns and the Aggies will play on the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is Nov. 27 this year.
