Per 247Sports/CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, junior Texas football tight end Amari Niblack intends to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Upperclassmen TE depth getting thin for Texas football after Amari Niblack announces intentions to enter the transfer portal
This comes after Niblack transferred from the Alabama Crimson Tide to Texas last offseason. Niblack played seven games for the Longhorns this past season, registering five catches for 33 receiving yards and no touchdowns.
He played over 125 snaps on offense and special teams with the return and field goal-coverage units (per PFF).
Niblack didn't see the field much for Texas in 2024. He was projected to be a big contributor to Texas's tight end room this past season, along with fellow upperclassmen Gunnar Helm and Juan Davis.
Helm had a record-breaking season as one of Texas's top receiver threats in 2024, registering 60 catches for 786 receiving yards, and seven touchdown catches.
Niblack transferred to Texas last offseason after the retirement of legendary Alabama head coach Nick Saban after he spent two seasons in Tuscaloosa.
In two-dozen games played at Alabama, Niblack had 21 catches for 342 receiving yards, and five touchdown catches. He had his most productive season at Alabama during the 2023 campaign, where he caught a touchdown pass in the Tide's 34-24 loss to Texas in Week 2 in Tuscaloosa.
A high-four-star athlete/tight end recruit from Clearwater (FL) Lakewood High School, Niblack signed with Alabama in the 2021 class over the Florida Gators, LSU Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, and Florida State Seminoles. He ranked as the No. 146 recruit nationally in the 2021 class in the 247Sports Composite, No. 5 athlete, and No. 17 from Florida.
Sarkisian, Banks, and the Longhorns have done a great job building more tight end depth with high school recruiting and player development in the past few years. Given how big the tight-end role is for one or two tight ends lining up in Sarkisian's offense, losing multiple players at the position with upperclassmen experience for multiple years in college leaves Texas's room here pretty green for the 2025 season.
