Somewhat surprisingly, the Week 8 matchup between the No. 1 Longhorns and the No. 5 Bulldogs is only the sixth time in history that the two teams will share a football field. Even more surprisingly, due to the more recent success levels of the two programs, Texas holds a pretty big advantage over Georgia.

Over the five past meetings, the Horns have walked away with four wins, including the Sugar Bowl in 2019 when quarterback Sam Ehlinger (in)famously said, "We're baaaaaaack."

Now, with Texas as a member of the SEC and Georgia seeking revenge for their recent losses to Alabama and their absence from the 2023 College Football Playoffs, the game just means more. Before the two powerhouse programs duke it out on Saturday, take a look back through their past:

Texas versus Georgia football history

  • Overall record: 4-1, Texas
  • First meeting: Jan. 1, 1941 – Texas, 41-28
  • Most recent meeting: Jan. 1, 2019 – Texas, 28-21
  • Largest margin of victory: 19 points, Texas – Sept. 21, 1957
  • Smallest margin of victory: 1 point, Georgia – Jan. 2, 1984

Three of the matchups between Texas and Georgia have been bowl games (1949 Orange Bowl, 1984 Cotton Bowl, & 2019 Sugar Bowl), and the Longhorns won two of them. Georgia's only win over the Horns came in 1084 when the Bulldogs defeated Texas by just 1 point in the Cotton Bowl.

Texas and Georgia held a home-and-away series over 1957 and 1958. Texas walked away victorious in both meetings, claiming the only game between the teams in Athens. The game in 2024 will be the second matchup between the two to ever take place in Austin.

The No. 1 Longhorns and the No. 5 Bulldogs are scheduled to kick off from Darrell K Royal Texas-Memorial Stadium at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
