Texas vs. Georgia: Staff predictions for SEC title game

The stakes are set for No. 2 Texas to face No. 5 Georgia in the SEC Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA, on Saturday afternoon for a top seed in the College Football 12-team Playoff.

No. 2 Texas football (11-1, 7-1 SEC) and head coach Steve Sarkisian have a chance to avenge their loss to the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs (10-2, 6-2 SEC) in the SEC Championship Game this weekend in Atlanta, GA.

In a rematch of the game where the Dawgs bested the Longhorns by two scores in Austin in mid-October, Texas is trying to reach the next step in its journey of contending for a National Championship.

The last time these two teams met at DKR on Oct. 19, the Georgia defensive front for head coach Kirby Smart overwhelmed quarterback Quinn Ewers and the Longhorns' passing attack. Texas turned the ball over multiple times, and didn't even start looking comfortable on offense until it was nearly too late in the second half of the game.

Texas knows what it must do today to topple Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, and ultimately secure a top two seeding in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff bracket this postseason.

If the Longhorns can find a good rhythm on offense early and run the ball effectively against Georgia's front seven, it should be a good day for Sarkisian and Texas in the SEC title game this afternoon.

While it's crucial that the Longhorns could have a healthier version of Quinn than we saw in October in SEC play and last week while dealing with the ankle issue in the win over Texas A&M, he's still got a tough matchup in front of him against a Georgia squad that turned them over four times.

Something else to note for this weekend's matchup between Texas and Georgia in the SEC title game is that junior starting left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. is still listed as "questionable" on the latest SEC injury report. If Banks is out, that is a big gap for the Texas offensive line to have at left tackle (where Trevor Goosby stepped up for Kyle Flood last weekend) against these talented and athletic Georgia edge rushers and outside linebackers.
