Texas women's basketball absolutely decimates the UTRGV Vaqueros

Texas women's basketball traveled to Edinburg to take on the UTRGV Vaqueros yesterday, and they easily took care of business on the road by dominating the Vaqueros 110-45. Even though this game felt inevitable for the Longhorns to win, they got a little challenge from the Vaqueros, and it will help them prepare for the Baylor Bears. That'll be an excellent non-conference matchup before the Longhorns take on some SEC teams next month.

I will say it was great to see players like Sarah Graves and Grace Prenter get some solid playing time last night. You never know when the injury bug will hit, and Vic Schaefer will have to use her in the lineup.

Here are four takeaways from yesterday's game against the Vaqueros:

1. Getting off to a fast start

With an opponent like UTRGV, you've got to knock them out in the first quarter. The Longhorns definitely did that with a 10-3 run to open the game. It could have been more if a couple of extra shots had gone through the hoop in the opening minutes, but it was good practice for what the Longhorns need to do against teams like Baylor on Sunday afternoon. The Bears aren't going to wait for the Longhorns to strike first in Fort Worth.

2. Forcing over 20 turnovers in the first half

I feel bad for the Vaqueros because of all the crazy turnovers the Longhorns created in the first half of the game. That's something that Texas needs to do on Sunday afternoon if they want to beat the Baylor Bears. I'm trying not to read too much into the turnover stat tonight since the Vaqueros aren't close to the Longhorns' talent level.

3. Good to see Justice Carlton thrive

With all the injuries the Longhorns have, it's good to see Justice Carlton thrive. She was the 2nd leading scorer for the Longhorns last night with 21 points. She will have to play her best games until everyone gets healthy. I really want to see how Carlton does against a team like Baylor. You really can't measure her ceiling against the Vaqueros, but you definitely can against the Bears.

4. Making their shots count

The last thing that the Longhorns can take away from this game is that they didn't take any bad shots. Yes, some of their shots didn't drop, but they weren't throwing up three pointers constantly. You could see the Longhorns were running their plays and getting open for quality shots. Yesterday's matchup felt like an excellent warm-up game for the upcoming clash this weekend.

Stay tuned as the Longhorns take on the Baylor Bears on Sunday afternoon.
