Texas women's basketball gets humbled by No.5 Vanderbilt in a rare SEC loss

Texas women's basketball traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, tonight to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores. Apparently, Texas thought tonight's game would have been a walk in the park.

Texas women's basketball recently hit the road for a couple of games in Tennessee, and their first stop was in Nashville to take on No. 5 Vanderbilt last night. After beating the Kentucky Wildcats back in Austin on Sunday, Texas needed to come into yesterday's game a little more focused. You can't start celebrating a win when you're up 14 points with 18 minutes left in the game. Texas looked completely lost on the floor as they lost 86-70 to the Commodores in a rare road loss.

I don't even know where to begin with how terrible of a performance the Longhorns had last night. Vanderbilt was definitely the better team, and they took advantage of the Longhorns' mistakes all night long.

Here are four takeaways from yesterday's loss to the Commodores in Nashville.

1. That was a start to forget

Let's not have that kind of a start ever again, please. Texas basically sleepwalked into the game, as Vanderbilt built an 18-7 lead against the Longhorns early. That's not how the number 4 team in the country should be playing defense. I don't know if the team is still fatigued from the last game against Kentucky, but let's not have that kind of start again. Texas won't have a number one seed in the NCAA women's basketball tournament next month with that kind of defensive performance.

2. Former player goes off on the Longhorns

For some reason, I didn't see anything anywhere about Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda committing to Vanderbilt over the summer. She was a former Longhorn who entered the transfer portal in search of more playing time. She definitely had a chip on her shoulder and ended up having a good game last night. I wish her nothing but the best of luck at Vanderbilt and her future endeavors. She definitely found a school that will allow her to shine on the court, and she definitely did that against Texas.

3. Shots weren't falling tonight

Another thing I'm sure Vic Schaefer would like to forget is how poor the Longhorns' shot selection was. Give credit to Vanderbilt for their great defense all night long, as they were forcing Texas to make bad shot selections. It's to the point that I don't even want to post the final shot percentages because you would think I was joking. I'm burning the game tape and getting ready to take on the Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday afternoon if I'm Schaefer.

4. Tennessee is smiling from ear to ear

I know one program that was excited to see the Longhorns lose yesterday: Tennessee. The Lady Volunteers have been searching for something to get the media off of Kim Caldwell's remarks after their game against South Carolina. I'm sure their coaching staff is about to start breaking down this game because Vanderbilt just gave the SEC a blueprint for slowing down the Longhorns.
