Women's Basketball hosted the James Madison University Dukes at the Moody Center to wrap up their five-game homestand to begin the season. Texas quickly got out to a big lead by the end of the first quarter. Even though James Madison kept trying to get back into the lead, the Longhorns kept them at bay. Texas would go on to win 95-56 over the Dukes last night.
Vic Schaefer also got some news earlier today that should excite Longhorns fans. Brihanna Crittendon announced her commitment to the University of Texas, and the ladies were super excited when she Facetimed the team to share her decision. You could tell Vic was trying to keep it professional in the video, but deep down inside, he was running out of the arena.
Here are the four takeaways from Wednesday's win over the JMU Bulldogs.
1. James Madison out-rebounded Texas in the first quarter
The main reason is simply because the Longhorns were making all of their shots, leaving less rebounds to be had for the Texas in general. Even though it looked like the Longhorns missed half of their shots in the first quarter, Texas made all but one of its free throws. It was just an unexpected stat from tonight's game that we wanted to point out. The ladies did their job, getting a 25-9 lead by the end of the first quarter.

2. Breya Cunningham have a game
Breya Cunningham had a good game for the Longhorns tonight. When the Dukes locked down Madison Booker in the first half, they passed the ball to Cunningham, and she understood the assignment. She finished the game with 17 points and 8 rebounds.
Having a secondary scorer is what Texas needed last season in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. They needed someone to step up when Booker gets shut down defensively. Texas has a lot of good shooters on its team that can help Booker out this season.
3. JMU can't keep possession of the ball
One thing I know the Dukes did on the flight back is go over how to keep possession of the ball. The Longhorns' defense had a field day against the Bulldogs in the turnover battle. The Longhorns forced 29 turnovers against the Bulldogs tonight. I'm actually pretty impressed it was that high. The Longhorns will undoubtedly have to do that in their next game if they want to take down one of the best teams in the country.
4. The season becomes harder now
After this five-game homestand, the Longhorns have to realize it's going to get harder from here on out. The next game for the Longhorns is taking on the #3 UCLA Bruins in the Players Era Championship. They are going up against Senior center Lauren Betts, who's projected to go first overall in next year's WNBA Draft. At 6'7, she's going to be a problem for the Longhorns.
It's time to prepare for the SEC Conference schedule by knocking off the Bruins.
