Texas women's basketball puts Oklahoma on notice with dominant win

Texas women's basketball took on the #10 Oklahoma Sooners yesterday at the Moody Center. Today's rivalry game lived up to the hype as the Longhorns went up against superstar Aaliyah Chavez. However, the Longhorns showed OU why you don't mess with Texas in the 78-70 win.

Texas women's basketball returned home to Austin to take on the #10 Oklahoma Sooners at the Moody Center yesteday. It was a packed house, with the State Farm Women's College Basketball Show coming to Austin for the first time ever.

Sarah Graves showed her hospitality by painting a picture for the crew. That was really cool of her to do, and I didn't know she did that in her free time. With all the excitement that was in the Moody Center after the pregame show, the Longhorns had a show to put on for the national audience.

Texas had an amazing first half as they were way out in front of the Sooners. However, with the Sooners, you can always expect a fight, as they stormed back in the third quarter. The Longhorns put on a grand finale, coming away with a 78-70 win over the Sooners on their home court. After the show they put on in Gainesville the other night, I wasn't too shocked by the final score of the game.

Here are four takeaways from the win against Oklahoma:

1. Commend the Sooners for shutting down Kyla Oldacre

I was a little surprised to see the Sooners limit Kyla Oldacre's offensive production to four points. She has been a massive presence for the Longhorns inside the paint, and the fact that she was held scoreless was incredibly shocking. However, it's a good thing that Aaliyah Crump and Justice Carlton showed up and carried the load on offense last night. The Longhorns might have been in some trouble if they hadn't shown up.

2. Shutting down Aaliyah Chavez

I remember being disappointed when the Longhorns were unable to recruit Aaliyah Chavez this past offseason. Everything seemed to be falling into place for Texas, and they looked like the clear frontrunners. However, Chavez has a lot to learn as a freshman, as the Longhorns shut her down. I have a lot of respect for who she is as a player, but the Longhorns taught her that she has a lot to learn if she wants to lead OU to an SEC Conference Championship.

3. Losing the turnover points battle

Even though the Longhorns came away with the victory, they lost the points-off-turnovers battle. The Sooners had 25 points off turnovers, compared with the Longhorns' 20. That's a battle you don't usually see a winning team lose.

Texas has to do a better job capitalizing on every turnover they force. They don't know how many offensive possessions they will have during the game. They have to make sure that gets fixed before Thursday against LSU.

4. Crump being a difference-maker

I seriously did not have Aaliyah Crump being the key difference-maker in yesterday's game for the Longhorns. I wish Texas could go back in time to when they played LSU and South Carolina back-to-back and see whether she would have made a difference in those two games. After watching her begin her college basketball career with Texas, you have to wonder if Schaefer found himself his own version of Paige Bueckers.

The Longhorns welcome the LSU Tigers to town as they look to get revenge against them.
