Texas Women's Basketball is getting ready for the upcoming season, which will get underway in a month and a half. Even though Vic Schaefer is preparing his ladies for a challenging non-conference schedule, which includes South Carolina, he's got to recruit for the future. There was one five-star prospect that was in Austin this past weekend that Schaefer needs to direct his recruiting efforts to.
Here's why Schaefer has got to get Olivia Vukosa to commit to the Longhorns.
Vukosa is a highly talented five-star center that has attracted numerous programs, including Ohio State and North Carolina, as they vie for the fourth-best player in the 2026 class, according to 247 Sports. You don't find many good post players like her coming out of high school these days. The Longhorns could use a center like her after losing Taylor Jones. Texas needs a good post player if they want to become the next South Carolina of the SEC.
Even though the Longhorns need to focus on other positions like guard, Vukosa needs to be Schaefer's primary focus. Yes, she's considering schools outside the conference, but they must be prepared in case of any injuries at the center position in the future. I don't know if Vukosa would start immediately if she committed to Texas, but she would at least be a pretty good rotational center during her first year.
Vukosa has what it takes to be a very competitive center in college basketball. You can tell how good she will be in the YouTube highlight reel above. Scoring 20 points while grabbing 20 rebounds is something that Schaefer or any women's basketball coach would love to have on their roster. The Longhorns need to press hard and get her to commit quickly before another team swoops in and steals her from the Longhorns. Even though the Longhorns missed out on Alliyah Chavez, this would be a great redemption commit for the Longhorns program.
