As the Longhorns are preparing for their biggest rivalry game of the season, and one of the most well-known rivalries in all of college football, Vegas has been all over the place trying to set a legitimate spread.
Despite being in somewhat of a disarray over the last week or two due to John Mateer's injury, Oklahoma has still been a great team in 2025 (sad to say), which makes the current spread for the Red River Rivalry game incredibly confusing.
According to FanDuel sportsbook, the current line is Texas -1.5. With how incredibly bad the Longhorns have been playing on offense this season, and taking into consideration their lack of pass rush on defense, the fact that Texas is favored in this matchup is crazy.
Texas' passing offense has been the epitome of dysfunctional throughout the first five games of the season, and their offensive line has been incredibly disappointing as well. They haven't been able to get consistent movement in the run game which has made Steve Sarkisian one-dimensional as a play caller as of late. They've been doing a good job of making some changes here and there to the personnel on the interior, but until there's consistent improvement there, the offense will continue to underwhelm.
The Sooners' offense and defense have been on a roll in 2025, which has been a surprise to the college football world. A lot of media outlets had Oklahoma projected to finish in the bottom half of the SEC this year.
Whether or not John Mateer plays against the Longhorns this weekend, the Sooners will still have a confident, and dangerous quarterback at the helm in Michael Hawkins Jr. He has a ton of experience from the 2024 season and can do pretty much everything that Mateer can do from an athletic standpoint.
It would be really surprising to see the spread stay at Texas -1.5 at kickoff. One last wave of betting could happen at the last minute, which could even cause the spread to end up favoring Oklahoma when it's all said and done.
