This mid-major star could look great playing for Texas next season

With how many guards the Longhorns are losing in the offseason, it would be smart to target this 4-star transfer.

Former San Jose State point guard Colby Garland is already in the transfer portal, and with the number of guards that Texas is losing in the offseason, he'd be an extremely welcome addition to next year's team.

As of this moment, the Longhorns are expected to lose Tramon Mark, Jordan Pope, and Chendall Weaver soon, now that Texas' 2025/2026 season is officially over following the loss to Purdue tonight.

Those are three players who were incredibly important to the team over the past two seasons, and guys who'll undoubtedly be hard to replace going forward for Sean Miller and his coaching staff. In addition to incoming freshmen Austin Goosby, Bo Ogden, and Joe Sterling, the Longhorns are going to have to look for replacements in the transfer portal.

This is where a player like Colby Garland comes in. The 6'0", 190-pound point guard has almost an identical build and skillset to Jordan Pope, though Garland is probably better at driving to the basket than Pope and shows a bit more aggressiveness in general.

Garland started 27 games for the Spartans in 2025/2026 and averaged 20.3 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game. He also shot 49% from the field, 37.2% from three, and 84.8% from the free-throw line.

He ended up being one of the most prolific scorers in SJSU history during his one season for the California school, and he'll undoubtedly end up being one of the most sought-after guards in this year's transfer portal.

He's already ranked as the No.4 PG in the portal, and there's even a chance that he could move up the ranks depending on who else decides to leave their current programs.

Being able to bring someone like Garland to Texas would be huge for the outlook of Longhorns basketball for 2026/2027. Combining Garland with the likes of Dailyn Swain and Matas Vokietaitis (assuming they don't declare for the 2026 NBA Draft) would be incredibly exciting to watch.
