Florida Gators star QB D.J. Lagway has officially let the members of UF's coaching staff know that he plans on entering the 2026 transfer portal when it opens in January.
Lagway, the former 5-star quarterback from Willis HS (Willis, TX) was the top-rated player from the state of Texas in the 2024 recruiting class, and the No.1-ranked QB in the class according to 247sports.com.
He actually told the media that he's staying at Florida recently, so the news of him leaving is undoubtedly shocking to the college football world as a whole. Though he was dealing with an injury in 2025, Lagway still put together a pretty nice season despite throwing quite a few unneccessary interceptions late in the year. He's still seen as one of the top collegiate quarterbacks right now, and he might set the record for the largest NIL deal to date wherever he goes.

The craziest part about Lagway's initial recruitment process from a Texas Longhorns standpoint, is that Steve Sarkisian and Co. never even offered him a scholarship in high school. He was courted by the likes of Texas A&M, Houston, and SMU, but not Texas. It's just interesting seeing that Sarkisian is known for his quarterback recruiting and development.
It'll be incredibly interesting to see where Lagway goes next, as he'll undoubtedly have an incredible amount of suitors going forward. There are plenty of top teams that will need a new starting quarterback in 2026, and who had ties to Lagway coming out of high school. Clemson, Texas Tech, Miami, and possibly Louisville stand out as of right now when it comes to programs who'll have the type of money that it could take to land him.
