We're now only a few days away from Texas' home opener against San Jose State, and quite a few media outlets have officially posted their score predictions for the game.
Austin American-Statesman
"The high-flying Spartans went 7-6 a year ago behind an Air Raid offense keyed by returning quarterback Walker Eget, but new coach Ken Niumatalolo has triple-option roots. It should be an interesting week of film for the Texas defense."
Score prediction: Texas 45, San Jose State 13
College Football News
"Completely and totally lost in the fist-shaking after the loss was a brilliant performance by the Texas defense. It gave up one big 40-yard touchdown pass on a great play by Buckeye wide receiver Carnell Tate. That was about it.
Ohio State only gained 163 yards on the day outside of that one pass. Granted, the Ohio State coaching staff kept things conservative, but Texas had a lot to do with that.
There wasn’t any running game in that, and San Jose State won’t run a lick in this."
Score prediction: Texas 48, San Jose State 6
Sports Illustrated
" Expect the Longhorns’ offensive line and running back duo to impose their will, opening the door for Manning to build confidence with downfield strikes. With Darrell K Royal buzzing for the home opener and Steve Sarkisian needing to reassert dominance, the script leans toward an emphatic response. Texas rolls big, and the depth pieces get work by the fourth quarter — a cover that reinforces their No. 1 aspirations aren’t dead yet."
Score prediction: Texas covers the -36.5 spread
Pro Football Sports Network
"Week 2 offers Texas a chance to get back on track. Sarkisian’s conservative game plan in Week 1, paired with Manning’s disappointing showing, has dominated the national college football conversation. However, the Longhorns are 36.5-point favorites at home against the Spartans, according to DraftKings, offering the opportunity to correct the Week 1 narrative.
Meanwhile, the Spartans were considered strong candidates to win the Mountain West, but a 16-14 defeat to Central Michigan in a messy game halted any momentum they carried into 2025.
San Jose State’s season will not be defined by its Week 2 game against Texas, but it offers the opportunity to make a statement. Quarterback Walker Eget threw for 308 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in Week 1, but the Spartans were limited on the ground.
Wide receiver Danny Scudero appears to be Spartans HC Ken Niumatalolo’s primary offensive weapon. Additionally, linebacker Jordan Pollard must perform well if the defense hopes to challenge No. 7 Texas’s talented offensive line."
Score prediction: Texas 44, San Jose State 7
