Week 8 SEC conference power rankings

After the bye week, Texas A&M faces the last-place team in the SEC power rankings, Mississippi State, on the road in Starkville on Oct. 19. While the Aggies are firmly trending up among the top tier or two of teams in the SEC, it would be foolish to assume any road SEC game is an automatic victory for anyone.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck light up Mississippi State's defense in a high-scoring 41-31 win in Athens Stadium last weekend, with over 450 passing yards and three pass TDs.
The Georgia defense is a bit concerning, though, giving up 31 points and over 300 passing yards to a freshman quarterback and a decimated Mississippi State offense in Week 7. Head coach Kirby Smart needs to get his defense right before the highly-anticipated Week 8 contest in Austin against the Longhorns.

Quarterback Quinn Ewers overcame a slow start in the Red River Rivalry game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas against the Sooners to lead the Longhorns to a convincing 34-3 victory on Oct. 12. Ewers took a while to shake off the rust, tallying up 199 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception after a poor start for the Texas offense in the first quarter.
The biggest story of the day in Red River for the Longhorns was the stifling play of this elite defense. Texas leads the nation this season in scoring defense, total defense, and yards per play allowed.
