Texas Football: 5 Takeaways from Notre Dame Win
By Tyler Brett
This offseason, Texas went through a bit of drama in securing their new offensive coordinator, Sterlin Gilbert. After Sunday night, whatever Texas went through and whatever they paid to Gilbert was totally worth it.
All summer, fans speculated about what Gilbert’s new offense would look like. In previous stops, his spread attack has provided an instant boost to the offensive production of his new teams. He has a track record of utilizing the talents of his roster and putting them in positions to succeed.
With the raw talent on the Texas roster, that ramped up expectations for this opener. While it’s only been one game, the results have been incredible. Against the Irish, Texas racked up 517 yards of total offense, including 280 passing and 237 yards rushing. They converted on 8 of 18 third down attempts and were a perfect 2 for 2 on fourth down conversions.
More important, the Texas offense looked explosive and had a rhythm to it that has been missing for years. There was a clear plan that was executed with precision. Gilbert had a clear idea of how to utilize the Longhorns’ talent and everyone on the roster bought in.
Now, they just need to continue to grow and mature and take those next steps as an offense. If they can do that, they’ll become a force to be reckoned with under Gilbert.
