Top All-Time Texas Football Quarterbacks – Number 14: Shane Buechele (2016-)

Career stats: 2,958 passing yards, 21 TDs, 11 INTs, 60.4 completion %, 136 passer rating, 161 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs

Okay, I’ll admit that this is more of a prediction than a true ranking of where Shane Buechele lands on the list of all-time Texas quarterbacks. However, through one season, it’s easy to see why he could eventually secure a spot among this group of gunslingers.

Yes, there’s plenty more football to be played for Buechele before his legacy is set. At the same time, we can’t ignore the fact that he looked like a rising star as a true freshman. Earning the starting job over the incumbent was a great beginning, but even more will be expected heading into his second year on campus.

For a freshman, though, Buechele showed very well in 2016. There were hiccups along the way, but he did a great job of using his athleticism to make plays while displaying promising arm talent. All of the tools are there for him to be the next great Texas quarterback. That is, if he can avoid the injuries and inconsistencies that have hindered Longhorns of years passed.

Based on what we’ve seen, Buechele could find himself much higher on this list when all is said and done. Fans will remain ever hopeful as Tom Herman leads this school in a new direction. Can Buechele be the guy to help Texas take that next step back towards relevance?
