Texas Football: Top 15 all-time Longhorns quarterbacks
Top All-Time Texas Football Quarterbacks – Number 13: Chance Mock (2001-04)
Career stats: 1,613 passing yards, 17 TDs, 2 INTs, 52 completion %, 142.1 passer rating,1 rushing TD
At this point, there are a lot of names who could probably slot in at No. 13. However, there’s one particular statistic that convinced me to hand the spot to Chance Mock over everyone else — the fact that the guy threw only two interceptions during his days at Texas.
Sure, he only started one year and had an otherwise unspectacular career with the Longhorns. The problem was that he played in Austin at the wrong time — he served as a backup to Chris Simms, Major Applewhite and Vince Young for most of his career. Playing behind names like that can lead anyone down the road to anonymity.
Still, when he was on the field, Mock showed well. He obviously did a great job of protecting the football while making big plays as a passer. Had he played for Texas at a different time or under different circumstances, it likely would have been a very different story. Unfortunately for him, though, he never had much of an opportunity to tap into his potential.
You also have to appreciate that he stuck it out with the Longhorns. With the emergence of Young, it was assumed that he would transfer to aid his possible NFL future. Instead, he stayed put in Austin, serving as one of the best backups the Longhorns ever had.
