The first quarterback on this list that is still with the Horns could also still win the starting job for the 2018 campaign. This also describes how Texas could be in its best quarterback situation since the departure of Colt McCoy. To-be junior Shane Buechele did have a much better show out in 2016 than he did in 2017.

During his freshman campaign, Buechele posted 21 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions. That made things look like Buechele could turn into the next big thing at quarterback for Texas. The problem that Buechele started to run into was at the end of his freshman season. Texas fans won’t soon forget the 2016 road loss to the Kansas Jayhawks in which Buechele laid an egg.

For the 2017 season, Buechele posted seven touchdowns and four interceptions and he started to give way to Sam Ehlinger. He is in the thick of the quarterback competition heading into this season. However, Buechele looks to have an uphill climb in front of him to surpass Ehlinger in that regard.

If nothing else, Buechele can be regarded well for his strong arm and pocket presence. The accuracy started to go downhill since the end of the 2016 season for Buechele. Getting used to the new offense under Tom Herman and offensive coordinator Tim Beck could have also caused an up and down season for Buechele in 2017. All in all, he’s been pretty solid for the Horns in his two years in Austin so far.
