Texas Football: Ranking the 5 best defensive backs since 2000
Unlike Elliott who was mainly commended for his last season with Texas, former All-American safety Michael Huff had a more complete body of work with the Horns. He also racked up an insane stat line for a safety by the time his senior season rolled around.
In his senior campaign, Huff managed 87 total tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, 1.0 interception, and 1.0 fumble returned for a touchdown. His first two years with Texas saw him also take back two interceptions for touchdowns in each season.
Huff was also the first Texas defensive back to win the Thorpe Award. That award names the nation’s top overall defensive back for that individual season. Huff was similar to Vasher in the sense that they both helped establish that trend as Texas a legitimate top spot in the nation for defensive backs to take their talents to.
Most Texas fans would keep the focus on legendary quarterback Vince Young as the reason why the Horns knocked off Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, and the Trojans in the 2006 Rose Bowl. Yet, Huff was also a key player in that most recent National Championship for this program.
