The first of the two quarterbacks that we’re taking a look at is a four-star dual-threat prospect coming out of Newcastle, OK, in Casey Thompson. During his recruitment, Thompson held 24 offers including the one from Texas. His decision came down to a handful of Big 12 schools like the Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, and Texas.

The final commitment seemed to favor Texas over the Sooners when it came down to it. He chose Texas and also made the decision to enroll early. Considering both quarterback signees enrolled early, this could be a great thing for the offense down the road.

Thompson is a very unique quarterback considering the comparisons for Texas in the past seven years. He’s a more mobile quarterback than someone like Shane Buechele or Case McCoy, but he throws better than Tyrone Swoopes did. Not to say that Thompson will be one of the best passing quarterbacks in the nation at his peak, but he does have an intriguing skill set compared to other past Texas quarterbacks.

In high school, Thompson was used as more of a running quarterback than someone who could sit in the pocket and pick apart the opposing secondary. He’s more in the likes of Sam Ehlinger in that regard.

For Thompson to prove he’s worth getting the starting gig within the next two or three years, he’ll have to show a potent ability to get in a good passing rhythm. Nobody doubts his ability using his legs to beat teams, but that’s easy to lock down on if he can’t find any of his passing targets.
